When you and your team play online, and are not together at the same location, you are probably using Zoom, MS Teams, Whereby, Skype or another online collaboration tool. This way you can play as a virtual team. You can organize a meeting and incite your team members for this meeting. When you play the quiz like this, each of the team members can open the YouTube or Facebook live stream on his or her own device. You will however notice in this case, that the streams are not timed in the same way. One stream might be a bit behind or in front, compared to the other stream. This is inherent to live streaming. The delay (or video latency) depends on a lot of factors, such as internet speed, and specification of your device. This means that some team members will hear a question before some of the others. This difference in timing can be up to 3 seconds…. Quite annoying!
However, there is a solution for this issue. In most of these tools, one of the team members can share his or her screen with the others. So, in this case, this person can share his or her window with the live stream (probably an internet browser window, such as Safari, Chrome or Edge). All team members now look at the same stream! So, no more delays, using the different streams. Problem solved!
One final pointer: make sure you also share the computer audio with your teammates. Otherwise, they can see the stream, but not hear it. Each of these tools has a different way of doing this, but usually this can be activated in the same window where the screen is shared. The picture below shows how this is done in Zoom, for instance.
We advise all teams to practice this, before playing the quiz. Be prepared!!
